Last May, on my son Mortimer’s first birthday, my aunt made the most incredible announcement—she was searching for a piece of Costa Rican pasture land that she could reforest and restore so that some day my barefoot boy may have a lush tropical rainforest to run through.
Over the following months she searched for land until settling on a beautiful 48 acre tract of rolling mountain hills on the Pacific slope of central Costa Rica. While there is certainly pasture land to be restored, there are also two creeks running through the property lined with wonderful old growth forest.
The process of finding the property, negotiating with the owners, lawyers, and government officials—especially during the COVID shut down has been frustrating to say the least in a hurry up and wait kind of way—but I’m so excited and amazed that last week my aunt was informed we have officially closed on the newly named: La Selva de Mortimer—or Mortimer’s Jungle.
I can’t wait for him to sink his fingers and toes into that beautiful red soil and marvel at the colorful birds and critters of the forest. I cannot even begin to express my awe and gratitude at the generosity of my amazing aunt! Thank you, Nancy Patterson, you are incredible!!
While these aren’t specifically photographs of the property, they are some of Nancy’s fantastic pictures from the area surrounding the property and give a good feel for the general habitat and ecosystems of the region.
